Mother Earth Weaves Infiniteis a new and expanded exploration of an earlier collaboration between Cathie Kayser and Ellen H Ray. In this site specific installation, the artists use a variety of materials and techniques, including fabrics, mulberry silks, soft sculpture, paper mache, and wire and paper sculptures to present an immersive experience that highlights the complexity of the mycorrhizal network. Inspired by the hidden systems that sustain forests and ecosystems, the installation reveals the intricate relationships that exist below our feet. Mycorrhizal fungi form connections with plant roots, exchange nutrients, water, and information supporting entire ecosystems. With this work, the artists invite viewers to consider the interconnectedness of all living systems. The Earth, and the universe encompassing it, is a master plan of intelligent design that holds lessons for us about systems that work.
Cathie Kayser creates art by looking at the natural world and its systems in order to better understand our man-made world. Through reading, research, and discussions with environmental activists and scientists, she makes works that address the broad range of topics currently being discussed by scientists, writers, poets, and artists. She is primarily a printmaker and has created books, portfolios, drawings, watercolors, and air-dry clay sculptures. She is a founder of PrintMatters, PrintHouston, and a community steamroller event. Ellen H. Ray is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in meditation and the study of genetic and spiritual connections across life forms. She makes drawings, objects, and installations in which organic and spiritual imagery mix with vibration patterns and other visuals experienced in meditation. Her work responds to the understanding that the air, soil, and water that surround us is teeming with life, and that we are connected to all beings through genetics and consciousness.
